Parikh panel to govt: Hike fuel prices

The Kirit Parikh panel submitted its recommendations to Petroleum Minister Murli Deora today to improve the efficiency of bleeding oil marketing companies.

The expert panel has recommended complete de control for petrol prices, full freedom to oil marketing companies to align diesel prices to market rate, increase the price of Kerosene by Rs 6 per litre and increase the price of LPG by Rs 100 per cylinder.

The recommendations, if implemented, would lead to an immediate increase in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 3 per litre... kerosene prices, which have not been touched since 2002, would also rise....

The government is not going to act immediately... Petroleum Secretary S Sundareshan said: "PMO has asked us to process this immediately. We will process and submit the report to the cabinet in a week's time."

There have been two reports preceding this report, which has been along similar lines. Complete decontrol of auto fuel pricing has been negated by political compulsions ever since.
